Ecology "Eco" comes from the Greek word oikos which means home. In Eco-Investigations, we investigate our home, the California Bay Area. We study Ecology, which is the branch of science concerned with the interrelationship of organisms and their environments. Through exploration and investigation, we will gain knowledge and understanding of our "home."
The process of inquiry enables us to better understand ourselves and the world around us. We learn to engage the powers of our mind to inquire about the things that we discover during our explorations. Inquiry enables us to learn about the environment and discover things about ourselves in the process. Stillness Our busy world does not give us much time for stillness and quiet. We rush from one place to the next barely noticing the plants and the animals that live around us. In order to investigate we need to slow down, to find the quiet that exists, and to engage our senses to fully know our world.
In Science, we gather information through observation, asking questions, making predictions, gathering data, and analyzing what we have discovered. Science requires lots of curiosity, a sense of discovery, and a desire to learn more. After gathering lots of information, we put the pieces together, kind of like a puzzle to create a picture of what we have discovered. Everything is interconnected. We are a part of the puzzle! |
Eco-Investigations are hands-on, inquiry-based activities in natural environments that help us to discover for ourselves the interconnected-ness of all things. During Eco-Investigations we learn about ourselves while we investigate the nature of the world. Eco-Investigations occur in different environments that encompass the beauty of the California Bay Area and are tailored for different groups: youth, families or adults. |
